Those of you who have read the book ‘Five Point Some One’ by Chetan Bhagat will find this movie more interesting. Those who haven’t,will find interest in life’s very basic question-Is life a creative process or a mechanical one?
Well. The scene ‘conceived’ towards the end of the movie-delivering a baby boy with the help of innovative thinking as everything including the power fails is truly very apt and speaks volumes about the creative brilliance of the director!
The movie has been directed by Rajkumar Hirani, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, written by the director alongside Abhijit Joshi while music has been scored by Shantanu Moitra. The movie has been released for public viewing on 25.12.2009.
There are three students who enter the ICE (Imperial College of Engineering) whose director (played wonderfully by Boman Irani) is after the students who are required to top and no second fiddle impresses him. Ranchu (Aamir) is the counter who has his own philosophy-listen to your heart and do not run after success. Success will follow you. He is joined by two others-Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi). The campus tribulations and the college antics pass off with some entertainment and the episode where the studious character Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya) reads out a welcome speech altered by Aamir goes down as pretty hilarious. The word ‘Balatkaar’ substitutes the word ‘Chamatkaar’ and the rest is sheer laughter.
Rancho tops while the other two learn their lessons in life from him. Quereshi turns out to be a wild life photographer and Rastogi stands up to himself. However, it turns out that Rancho is not the real name of Aamir. He had taken the name only as part of an Agreement only to hand over the certificate to his master’s son. His real name is Wangdu who is now the most sought after scientist with patent rights for several companies across the globe. Chatur Ramalingam comes in search of him without knowing that this was Aamir and draws the other two for a different purpose. He demonstrates to them about his success as ordained in a bet and the three set out in his search. This is how the movie takes off. The reunion of Aamir and Kareena Kapur ( Irani’s daughter) is also arranged. As Chatur realizes that Wangdu is none other than Aamir, he runs behind him and the movie ends by the statement-Success will chase you…
A well made movie which is entertaining throughout. Just as you think that there is something serious happening, the lighter vein is used to dilute the atmosphere and this is the craft which holds the entire treatment together. This runs parallel to he very character of Aamir Khan. Aamir carries the whole movie with him with absolutely free style acting. Omi Vaidya and Sharman Joshi have also come up with creditable performances. Madhavan is at his usual ease. Kareena looks more like a female wrestler and with Aamir, perhaps gives a real creative job for the Camera man to put them in the right frame!
Music is pleasing as well. The duet with Kareena resembles the ‘Jise Dhundtaa hun maein…’ from ‘dil chaahtaa hai’.
The stripping of pants, the toilet scenes are found to be one in too many. Some moderation might only have helped the movie’s class a long way.
A movie worth seeing.
